why was the berlin wall built?
Despite the "defensive" reasons given for the wall separating East and West Berlin, the wall was foremost built to prevent residents of East Berlin from leaving to live in West Berlin, from 1949-1961 more than 2.6 million east Germans escaped to west Germany. The life was better in the west than the east. As well the country had two different currencies. With a different value for the same bill.
The west Berlin city government usually called it "The wall of shame" because it restricted freedom or movement from one place to another.
In the 28 year span more than 5,000 people escaped from east to west. From 136 to 200 people died trying.
The wall stretched for 96 miles, but only 27 miles separated east and west Germany.
The west side of the Berlin wall was covered in graffiti. The East side was not.
The west side of the Berlin wall was covered in graffiti. The East side was not.
Although November 9th 1989 is recognized as the date of the fall of the Berlin Wall, official demolition of it didn't start until June 13th 1990. Between November 9th and June 13th, border controls still existed, although were less strict than previously. Parts of the wall was chipped away by Germans to keep as souvenirs/sell on eBay.
